Children's Literature for Children implements and supports literature teaching programs in elementary schools serving disadvantaged children. Volunteers work closely with host school personnel to organize the programs.
Volunteers in structured children's literature programs:
* read with students individually and in groups
* encourage students to practice and record independent reading on regular basis
* teach students about books and authors
* instill in students a love of books
* increase students' levels of literacy
* help students select appropriate books
* maintain the inventory of CLC books

In Atlanta, CLC has extended an inner-city literature program into a public/independent school partnership. Atlanta public elementary school, Scott, and the Atlanta independent elementary school, Westminster, take turns hosting each other and creating opportunities for children to share books and activities. Westminster releases its elementary literature teacher one day a week to teach children's literature at Scott. Many of the volunteers who work at Scott have an affiliation with The Westminster Schools. Structured literature programs have been implemented in other Atlanta public schools and at Mt. Kenya Academy in Kenya. The program works well with children in grades 2 through 5. Reading journals are an integral part of the program.

Structured literature programs may be implemented in any location where volunteers and children can meet among books. Create a library through Reader-to-Reader.
